Anjuna beatsAbove & Beyond began 2008 playing to 1 million people on New Year’s Eve in Rio (thought to be the largest live DJ gig ever) - an auspicious start and another milestone in their fast-rising journey to becoming “one of Britain’s biggest dance outfits” (The Sun).

Anjunabeats Volume 6’ is the next instalment in their highly successful label compilation series and features the pick of the label’s artists across Anjunabeats and housier offshoot Anjunadeep. Including numerous exclusives, as well as their own productions and remixes, Above & Beyond’s mix illustrates once again why both labels are magnets for electronic dance music connoisseurs.

Currently ranked No.6 in DJ Magazine’s Top 100 DJs Poll, Above & Beyond were recently voted 11th in Mixmag’s list of the best dance acts of the past 25 years. Their weekly radio show is a regular fixture in the iTunes music podcast Top 10, mirroring the success of their recent OceanLab album, ‘Sirens Of The Sea’, which was a Top 10 seller in both the UK and US iTunes sales charts.

However, statistics tell only a fraction of the story. Their rise to global attention is seen through the eyes of tens of thousands of music fans worldwide each weekend. Now captured on their Youtube channel, Tony, Paavo, and Jono’s exploits have taken them to all four corners of the earth. Highpoints in recent months include selling-out London’s Ministry Of Sound, a monumental show in Beirut, a trail-blazing visit to Bolivia, and a bus tour across the USA, including a career-defining performance at the Coachella festival.

CD1 of ‘Anjunabeats Volume 6’ showcases the Anjunadeep sound, the deeper, atmospheric-end of the Anjuna spectrum that’s attracted champions such as Sasha, James Zabiela, and Desyn Masiello. Highlights include tracks from Jaytech, Komytea (aka Michael Cassette), Joonas Hahmo, Paul Keeley (‘ASOH’ as featured in Zabiela’s Glastonbury Essential Mix), Joonas Hahmo (‘Cocktail Bar’), Andy Moor (‘Fake Awake’), and more. HASTE THE DAY TOUR & RELEASE NEW ALBUM CALLED 'DREAMER' THIS NOVEMBER

New beginnings, they can be both exciting and terrifying. Take for instance the last two years in the life of the Indianapolis based band Haste the Day. Since forming in early 2001, the band has maintained the same 5 members, both brothers and friends, and have toured all over North America and Europe as both headliners and direct support for bands like Bleeding Through and From First To Last among others.

In late 2005 long time vocalist Jimmy Ryan announced he was leaving the band to focus on his new marriage. History tells us that regardless of who writes the band’s material, the vocalist is always the face and the first impression to the outside world. It isn’t often a band can successfully triumph over a vocalist exit but Haste the Day never considered giving up. “I had no doubt we’d continue,” states guitarist Jason Barnes now a year past Ryan’s exit. “When he told us, we wondered who we would replace him with but there was never any consideration to stop.” The band's third full-length album (and first without Jimmy Ryan, now fronting TRENCHES) has gone on to out-sell both previous records with over 65,000 scans.

The band, featuring vocalist Stephen Keech, bassist Mike Murphy, rhythm guitarist Brennan Chaulk and his brother, drummer Devin Chaulk have given us the absolute strongest Haste the Day album yet.

Haste the Day have set themselves up for a triumphant arrival in Dreamer, out October 11th through Solid State / Stomp.

Check out the track '68' taken from Dreamer here: www.myspace.com/hastetheday

RADIOHEAD RE-WORK INSPIRES JUSTIN MARTIN REMIX COMP

JUstinMartin2Justin Martin's eagerly anticipated new mix compilation ('Chaos Restored 2') comes out on Ben Watt's Buzzin' Fly on Oct 25. It includes Justin's much-talked-about exclusive remix of Radiohead's 'Nude', after he - like many other fans - simply downloaded the parts when the band made them available online this year.

The mix has been a talking point on many blogs since it started circulating earlier this year. Radiohead were alerted to his remix and, in a spirit worthy of their new found independence, graciously granted Buzzin' Fly the subsequent license for its use.

Inspired by the turn of events, Buzzin' Fly is now offering Justin Martin fans the chance to do something similar. Justin's next single out in November will be a brand new track culled from the compilation called 'My Angelic Demons'.

For a special bonus track fans are invited to take part in a competition to remix Justin's seminal 2007 classic 'The Fugitive', with the winning remix to be included in the package.

Parts for 'The Fugitive' are available to download now. All entries must be submitted by Oct 1.

'STRAY AGE' BY DANIEL MARTIN MOORE OUT THIS OCTOBER THROUGH STOMP/SUB POP

packshotYou’ve never heard of Daniel Martin Moore, from Cold Spring, Kentucky.  That’s okay. Before Sub Pop received his unsolicited demo in January 2007, neither had we.  Luckily, he’d heard of Sub Pop, and contacted them the way people in Cold Spring still do- he sent in a package, just to see what would happen.  In all honesty, his odds were quite slim, but occasionally Sub Pop take down that “no solicitation” sign on their door.  Eventually, they opened his package and gave his four songs a listen and decided to contact him- they happened upon Daniel while he was working at a friend’s bed and breakfast in Costa Rica.

The first thing you’ll notice about his debut, “Stray Age” is its simplicity.  It’s a folk record, evoking certain feelings (as all good records should), but there’s a gentle approach to its sound and the way Moore’s voice phrases his words.  The record was recorded in Los Angeles in three different spurts, the first two sessions taking place in October and December of 2007, then the third in February of 2008.  He even got some people you’ve heard of to help him out.  Joe Chiccarelli (The Shins, U2, The White Stripes) took on co-production, recording and mixing duties.  Justin Meldal-Johnsen (Beck, Tori Amos) played upright bass.  Jesca Hoop lent her voice to “The Old Measure” and “Restoration Sketches.”  And Petra Haden (Bill Frisell, Beck) adds violin to “It’s You,” “The Hour Of Sleep,” and “The Old Measure.”

Those reference points are really just that, though.  Moore is most captivating as a singer, one who doesn’t seem concerned with usual folkie fodder.  If you ask him what his music’s about – a legitimate question – he just politely shrugs his shoulders in a way that says, “that’s up to you to figure out.”  But, the insights in “Stray Age” are not secrets and would never hope to be.  Yet as simply as Daniel Martin Moore thinks of “Stray Age,” it’s rich with understated complexities that take you to places that people like Nick Drake and Mojave 3/Slowdive principle Neil Halstead have been cited as doing.  There’s a soft swing in the vocals reminiscent of Chet Baker.  But the one thing with Moore, that we like to think of as separating him from the pack, is he’s looking forward.  He wants to go places, he wants you to come with him, and we’re finding him right in that moment.

Head to Daniel's MySpace to hear two tracks from Stray Age - 'That'll Be The Plan' and 'Every Colour And Kind' - http://www.myspace.com/danielmartinmoore

'Stray Age' is out on the 11th  of October 2008.

BEN WATT GETS SET TO RELEASE HIS 1ST SINGLE IN 3 YEARS

Ben WattIt has been a long time since label boss Ben Watt's last stand-alone single on Buzzin' Fly - over three years in fact. Back then his memorable vocal cuts ('Pop A Cap In Yo' Ass' with Estelle, 'Attack Attack Attack' with Baby Blak, 'A Stronger Man' with Terence Trent D'Arby and 'Lone Cat') helped define the label's sound during its first two years.

They followed a string of acclaimed remixes for Sade, Maxwell, Terri Walker, Meshell Ndegeocello and the electronic-pop-crossover highwater marks achieved with partner Tracey Thorn in Everything But The Girl in the late nineties, most notably 'Walking Wounded' and 'Temperamental'.

He returned to quietly contribute the excellent 'Just A Blip' to 2007's Buzzin' Fly Volume 4 compilation and remixed cult Danish band, Figurines' debut 'Silver Ponds' the same year, but has otherwise remained seemingly content to curate his award-winning imprint's prolific output and play the role of focal DJ at label events both home and abroad.

But from a personal point of view another story can be told. The death of his father in 2006 worsened an already severe period of writer's block that began in 2005, and it was only through a recent total rejection of his normal working methods was he able to restart again.

Shutting the door on his studio of thirteen years, he went back to basics with an old Akai sampler, a couple of vintage synths and a basic sequencer. The first fruit is 'Guinea Pig' (named after the experimental fresh start) and comes in two variations. An early mix of the Musical Variation was roadtested cautiously at Miami WMC 2008.

Typically unsure, Ben was about to shelve it until both Claude VonStroke and Justin Martin emerged from the crowd and asked after it enthusiastically. Encouraged to finish it off he invited London singer Julia Biel (who sang the gorgeous 'I Love You' on Buzzin' Fly in 2004) to collaborate on the Vocal Variation. Tense, oscillating synths, syncopated cross-sticks, sampled jazz be-bop pianos and a super-fat bass lay out the mood which is built and stretched in a series of peaks and breaks. Biel's beautiful vocal delivers a typically astute Watt lyric.

The track turned many heads around the booth at the recent Buzzin' Fly 5th Birthday in London, while the crowd simply responded with their feet and their hands. It's good to have him back. Deep, dance business.

'Guinea Pig' is out on Oct 20.

JAMES CURD FROM THE GREENSKEEPERS TO MIX 'LIMBO SESSIONS - VOL 1' PRESENTED BY ELECTRIC CIRCUS

James CurdStraight out of Chicago, the Greenskeepers had a certified radio hit in 2005 when their track "Lotion" crossed over to become a #1 requested song on JJJ. It also managed to appear in the J's Hottest 100 list. James Curd is one half of Greenskeepers.

Hugely influential, James Curd has mixed Limbo Sessions, Volume One presented by Electric Circus. The intended four-part series showcases new and exciting music from a variety of genres. Curd, a rock ‘n’ roll kid, started his DJ career in the early ‘90s in the heavily influenced Chicago music scene. Such was his rapid rise to prominence, by the time his 19th birthday arrived he was holding down residencies with famed house stalwart Derrick Carter. Moreover, Curd was releasing music on labels such as Classic, Warner Brother’s and Om Records.

In 2000 James launched Greenskeepers Music and G-Swing. Curd began capturing huge attention with his ‘30s swing style records. Press support and media exposure came from all corners, including esteemed mags like Rolling Stone. The publicity and the hype were justified – James and the Greenskeepers name were compared to American eccentrics Green Velvet and Felix Da Housecat.

But the best was yet to come. In 2004 Greenskeepers their first album "Pleetch" which scored huge success within the music licensing world. In 2005 Curd took the Greenskeepers on the road live. After a hectic schedule of non-stop touring, James Curd and the band ventured back into the studio. The result was the 2006 effort Polo Club, an album hailed by music and lifestyle media.

ARCTIC MONKEYS TO MIX THE NEXT 'LATE NIGHT TALES' INSTALLMENT

AM_promoshotThe 21st installment of the esteemed 'Late Night Tales' compilation series sees Matt Helders, the drummer & heartbeat from The Arctic Monkeys put together a selection of his favourite ever tracks. A more varied musical selection than you might expect, Matt has blended US and UK hip hop, dirty rock ‘n’ roll, electro and soul to create a soundtrack that you may hear at his, kicking back after a night out.

What's more exciting is that this compilation includes Matt’s cover of the club classic 'Dreamer' by Livin’ Joy, recorded with producer Ross Orton (produced the amazing M.I.A'sGalang’) and singer Nesreen Shah. The simplistic but driving breaks and keyboard lines are the perfect lo-fi backdrop to this rave classic for these eclectic times.

Matt began DJ’ing before he picked up the sticks for The Arctic Monkey, playing big dance tunes of the day with the So Solid Crew and Dr Dre on the playlist. He's returned to the wheels of steel this year, playing at Ibiza Rocks and Field Day and also producing remixes for artists as diverse as Roots Manuva, We Are Scientists and Duran Duran.

The Late Night Tales mix starts off with the cinematic ‘Connexion’ by Goblin (Italian progressive rock band known for their soundtracks for Dario Argento films) and runs through hip hop from Roots Manuva, Mos Def, MF Doom and DJ Format plus classic proto punk from The Stooges and Jonny & The Hurricanes. Theres also tunes from Simian Mobile Disco, Modeselektor, Black Keys & the finale is saved for The Rapture’s epic ‘Olio’ which Matt knew he always wanted to end the compilation with. Packshot

But that’s not quite it, with an exclusive story ‘A Choice Of Three’ penned and narrated by Alex Turner, also of the Arctic Monkeys; it’s the perfect end to another brilliant Late Night Tales.

DANNY HOWELLS PRESENTS THE 'MIX COLLECTION', RELEASED 13TH SEPTEMBER

Dannyhowells_promoRenaissance: The Mix Collection’ began with THAT legendary mix from Sasha and John Digweed. The original presented a collection of music that wasn’t focused on current or unreleased tracks, rather something more tangible and longer lasting. Now the series returns, taking influence from its famed predecessor, whilst adding a surprising new element.

With all this in mind who better than Danny Howells to construct the mix. A DJ renowned for his unrivalled ability to tap into the vast, rich resources of House; a challenge he clearly relished, “I have utmost respect for Renaissance, having maintained the highest quality of product since their inception, and never letting that quality slip. Renaissance has, in my eyes, always stuck to what they believe in.” says Danny, “The end result is a lot deeper than I've done before... it’s a lot more melodic. It's all the music that I love…”

Danny also chose the Mix Collection to premier his first batch of original productions in over three years. In fact, this double disc contains no less than seven exclusive tracks, remixes and edits. The result is a timeless collage of sound that draws reference from Danny’s current dancefloor favourites, lost classics and his own original material – in short, a true Mix Collection!

SUB POP'S BLITZEN TRAPPER TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM 'FURR' SEPT 27.

BT_furrcoverFurr is the fourth record by Portland sextet Blitzen Trapper and the follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed Wild Mountain Nation. Written in the gaps of the group's frenetic touring schedule and recorded mostly in a hoary old telegraph building close by the Willamette River, the new record refines and expands on the far-ranging yet distinctive songcraft that lies at the heart of Blitzen Trapper's unique appeal.

Like its predecessor, Furr was made largely in the group's studio at Sally Mack's School of Dance, which is housed in the aforementioned telegraph building near downtown Portland. This is a small T-shaped room with high ceilings, a couch, a hot-plate, and a mixing console. During reprieves from tour, songwriter and producer Eric Earley lived furtively in the studio, crashing on the couch, but rising with the sun or staying up into the nether hours when the other bands in the building quit and went home. It was during these quiet times that the new songs took shape, with rhythm sections printed hot to four-track and then layered and embellished and deconstructed or sometimes just left the way they were.

One key to this new material was an ancient, warped piano that appeared in the hallway one day at Sally Mack's School of Dance and which was subsequently muscled into the group's studio. Though out of tune and missing teeth, this piano became the warhorse upon which Earley wrote and recorded much of Furr. The beast has gone away to the landfill now, but you can still hear the clacking and clattering of its rickety skeleton in songs like "Not Your Lover" and "Echo."

Blitzen Trapper is a group of native Northwesterners, most of whom grew up in Salem, Oregon. They have lived and played together in Portland since 2000. Critics and fans have compared their music to just about everything; there have been calls to coin a new genre. After self-releasing Wild Mountain Nation in June of 2007, the group ventured beyond the West Coast for the first time to tour extensively in Europe and North America.
